ENGLISH And AMERICAN LABRADORS . . .

The Labrador Retriever is a very versatile breed.  Labs can be hunters, search and rescue dogs, guide dogs for the blind, and show champions, but most of all loving, family companions.  The two types of Labradors are:

English - describes those dogs which are short, stocky, and heavy boned with broad heads.  Specifically, these are the show Labs.

American Field - was bred for speed and endurance in the field.  They are typically finer boned, taller Labs with a more stream lined head. Specifically, these are the hunting champions.

Generalizations have been made stating that English are calmer and American is more hyper. In our experience, it is totally dependent upon the dog. We have had English Labs that would "chew" everything in sight and have boundless energy, and we have had American Labs that are perfectly content sitting at our side or lying on the couch.

Many Labs are a mixture of English and American. There are Labs that may appear English, but have very strong American bloodlines or American that has English qualities. By and large, the combination of the two produces dual-purpose Labradors. BUT, English Labradors have acquired Field Hunting Championships and American Labradors are commonly pleasant family pets. In our opinion, it is individual preference, remembering each puppy has its own personality, body structure, etc.

At Country Pride, we have English, American/Field, and English/American Labradors. We are totally enamored with the magnificent Labrador Retriever and its incredible temperament, versatility, loyalty, and love for their owners. It is our goal to offer the perfect Lab whatever his/her purpose may be for their owners.
